Does Short Sleep Really Increase the Risk of Hypertension?

Short sleep may increase the risk of hypertension. A 2025 study found that sleeping for 5 hours or less per night is an important threshold associated with higher risk. Smoking and prolonged sitting may further increase this risk, while regular physical activity may help reduce the negative impact of short sleep.

Does Short Sleep Really Increase the Risk of Hypertension?

In today’s fast-paced world, “short sleep” has become normal for many people. But did you know that this habit may carry a hidden risk of serious health problems, especially hypertension, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease?

Although there have been many debates about the relationship between sleep and blood pressure, a 2025 study from China helped clarify the issue and provided a clearer definition of “short sleep”. Let us take a closer look at how insufficient sleep may affect blood pressure and how lifestyle changes may help reduce the risk.

How Little Sleep Is Considered “Short Sleep”?

One problem in previous research was the lack of a clear definition of how little sleep becomes harmful. This study used advanced statistical models to analyse a population sample and found that the relationship between sleep duration and hypertension risk follows a U-shaped pattern.

The most important turning point was 5 hours. The study concluded that sleeping 5 hours or less per night can be considered a key threshold for short sleep that is significantly associated with an increased risk of hypertension.

The More You Sleep, the Lower the Risk

For people in the short sleep group, meaning those who sleep no more than 5 hours per night, the good news is that risk may be reduced simply by increasing sleep duration.

The study found that for every additional 1 hour of sleep, the risk of hypertension decreased by 32%.

However, for people who already sleep more than 5 hours per night, increasing sleep time did not produce a further significant reduction in hypertension risk.

Health Behaviours: Risk Accelerators and Risk Reducers for Hypertension

If you truly cannot avoid short sleep, the study also highlights health behaviours that directly affect people who sleep less than 5 hours per night.

Behaviours to Watch Out For: Risk Accelerators

  • Smoking: Increases the risk of hypertension by up to 128%.
  • Working in the same posture for long periods: For example, sitting at a desk all day without changing position may increase the risk by 103.4%.

Behaviours to Practise: Risk Reducers

  • Regular exercise: Continuous physical activity or regular exercise for more than 6 months may help reduce the impact of short sleep and lower the risk of hypertension by up to 63.7%.

Conclusion: Start Changing Your Habits Today for Better Heart Health

Getting enough sleep, especially more than 5 hours per night, is the first line of defence against hypertension. However, if your lifestyle forces you to rest less, taking care of other aspects of your health becomes even more important.

Quitting smoking, moving your body during the day, and exercising regularly are key steps that may help protect you from the silent threat of hypertension.
