Anorexia: The Silent Danger Hidden in Chew-and-Spit Eating Behaviour
Anorexia is not simply about wanting to be thin. It is a condition linked to distorted body image, social pressure, and disordered eating behaviours such as chew and spit. These behaviours can harm both physical and mental health, including long-term effects on bone density and muscle mass.
The Hidden Risk of “Anorexia” and the Chew-and-Spit Trend That Should Not Be Ignored
In an era where social media strongly influences beauty standards, it is undeniable that “thinness” has become an ideal many people strive to achieve. While weight loss can be beneficial for people with obesity or excess body weight, taking it too far until it becomes an obsession may lead to anorexia and disordered eating behaviours such as chewing food and spitting it out. This behaviour carries unexpected risks to health.
When Is Weight Loss Considered “Balanced”?
Weight loss can be beneficial and necessary for people living with obesity, as obesity is a major contributor to many degenerative and chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, inflammation in the body, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.
However, problems arise when people whose weight is already within a normal range, and who do not have excess body fat, continue trying to lose more weight until they become extremely thin. This can be a warning sign of anorexia.
Anorexia: When the Reflection in the Mirror Becomes Distorted
Anorexia, or anorexia nervosa, is a condition in which a person’s perception of their own body shape becomes distorted. Even if the body is already severely underweight, they may still feel that they are overweight or have excess fat.
Pressure from society, combined with psychological distress, may lead them to refuse food. Allowing the body to remain in a state of malnutrition can cause serious health consequences, including:
- Skin and hair: Dry, dehydrated skin and increased hair loss, making the body appear depleted and prematurely aged.
- Hormonal system: Hormonal imbalance, which can affect overall body function. In women, this may lead to missing or absent menstrual periods.
- Nervous system and brain: The brain may not receive enough nutrients, leading to slower processing, fatigue, and poor concentration.
- Bone and muscle mass: Bones may become thin and fragile, while muscles may shrink, weaken, and lose strength.
Medical Note: Why Bone and Muscle Mass Matter
Bone and muscle health are especially important when planning for healthy ageing and retirement. Older adults who are able to walk, move independently, and care for themselves usually have sufficient bone density and muscle mass. Damaging muscle mass through food restriction can inevitably reduce quality of life later in life.
The “Chew and Spit” Trend: A Risky Behaviour, Not a Fashion Statement
One topic currently being discussed and seen as an online trend is “chew and spit” behaviour. Some people copy it because they believe it allows them to taste food without consuming calories. However, from a medical perspective, this is not a normal or harmless behaviour.
This behaviour reflects a serious internal conflict: part of the person wants to eat, while another part fears gaining weight. Repeating this behaviour may indicate an underlying mental health concern. If a person feels unable to control it, they should seek advice from a qualified medical professional.
Following the chew-and-spit trend simply because it appears fashionable online is strongly discouraged. Beyond harming physical and mental health, it can also reinforce unhealthy and abnormal eating patterns.
Conclusion: Good Health Begins With Balance
Understanding the dangers of anorexia and disordered eating behaviours is the first step in protecting your health. We understand that social pressure around body shape is real. However, a strong body, healthy muscle mass that protects the bones, and well-functioning body systems represent a more sustainable and genuine form of beauty.
If you or someone close to you is struggling with body image concerns that affect daily life, consulting a doctor is the safest and most appropriate step towards receiving proper guidance and care.
